In the 14th century, it became the capital of Margraviate of Brandenburg and served as the main hub for many other empires. It was the third -largest city in the world in the 1920s but after World War II and subsequent occupation divided the city into West and East Berlin. East Berlin was the capital of East Germany and West Berlin and West German. Later it became one city in 1990 under the reunification and became the capital of all Germany.
